Section 1: Installing the Electronic PictureBook
----------------------------------------------
A. If you downloaded the Electronic PictureBook via Internet:
Electronic PictureBooks are sent via the Internet as compressed, binhexed files. Before an Electronic PictureBook can be opened, it must first be “de-binhexed” and then decompressed.
Some popular application software programs, such as Gopher, automatically “de-binhex” files as part of the downloading process. Other programs, such as Telnet, do not automatically de-binhex files. If the name of the file you have downloaded ends in “.sea,” then the file has been de-binhexed. If it ends in “.hqx,” it has not been de-binhexed.
If the file has already been de-binhexed, it must still be decompressed and installed on your machine. To perform this procedure, begin by creating a file on your hard drive named “Electronic PictureBooks” (do this by selecting "New Folder" under the File menu). Next, double-click on the Electronic PictureBook icon to bring up a window asking you where on your hard drive you wish the file to be placed. Select the “Electronic PictureBooks” folder, and click on “Extract” to decompress the file and place it in a usable form in the selected folder. To open the Electronic PictureBook, simply double-click on the Electronic PictureBook's new icon in the “Electronic PictureBooks” folder.
If your application program has not automatically de-binhexed the Electronic PictureBook file, you will need to de-binhex and decompress the Electronic PictureBook file before opening it. If you do not already have a de-binhexing program, several of them are available as shareware or freeware on the Network. We recommend BinHex 4.0. After de-binhexing the file using your chosen software, you can double-click on the file icon, select where on your hard drive you wish the file to be placed, and click on "Extract" to decompress the file and place it in a usable form on your machine. (Again, we recommend that you place it in a spearate folder on your hard drive called “Electronic PictureBooks.”) To open the Electronic PictureBook, simply double-click on the Electronic PictureBook's new icon.
B. If you retrieved the file using a modem:
The Electronic PictureBook will be in its compressed form called a “self-extracting archive.” In order to open the Electronic PictureBook, you must do the following:
1) Create a new folder on your hard disk and name it “Electronic PictureBooks.”
(To do this, select ‘New Folder’ from the ‘File’ menu and type in the name
“Electronic PictureBooks.”)
2) Double click on the Icon ending with the suffix “.sea.”
3) At the window “Self-unstuffing archive,” press Continue, which
will produce a dialog box asking you to indicate where you would
like to place the Electronic PictureBook.
4) Select the folder entitled “Electronic PictureBooks” which you created
in step 1, and click on Save. A time bar will show the progress of the
installation procedure.
5) When the installation is complete, a dialog box will appear stating
“Installation was successful!”
To open the Electronic PictureBook, double-click on the Electronic PictureBook’s icon.
Keep in mind that for Electronic PictureBooks to work correctly on your system,
you must have the following:
1. HyperCard 2.1 or HyperCard Player 2.1 (or a later version);
2. At least 4 MB RAM.
3. System 7.0 (or a later version).
If you do not have a current version of HyperCard (HyperCard 2.1 or newer), see Section 2 below.
-------------------------------------------------
Section 2: Installing HyperCard Player 2.1
-------------------------------------------------
You may have chosen to download HyperCard Player 2.1 with your Electronic PictureBook. Please note that this software is under license to the developer, and that you may use it only with this Electronic PictureBook. If you already have HyperCard 2.1 or a later version, you do not need to install the HyperCard Player software on your machine.
Regardless of whether you downloaded the HyperCard Player file using a modem or via Internet, the file is contained in a folder with your Electronic PictureBook. Hence, the de-binhexing/decompression process used for the Electronic PictureBook will most likely be performed automatically on the HyperCard Player file as well. If not, you must go through the same steps of de-binhexing and decompressing the file as was done for the Electronic PictureBook file, described in Section B above.
We recommend that you keep HyperCard Player in the “Electronic PictureBook” folder created in step 1 above.
HyperCard Player requires at least 2000 K to operate the Electronic PictureBook stack. To be sure you have that amount of memory allocated to it, open the HyperCard
Player “Get Info” box by clicking once on the HyperCard Player icon to highlight
it (do not launch the application), and then select “Get Info” from the File menu. A box will appear with information about the software. Find the “Preferred Size” or "Current Size" box in the lower right corner. It should say “2000”. If it does not, type 2000 in the “Preferred Size” or "Current Size" box, and then close the “Get Info” box. If you are unable to enter information in the "Preferred Size" box, check to see that the the "Locked" box in the left hand corner of the window is unlocked. If it is locked, click on the “x” in the “Locked” box to unlock the Preferred Size box.
